Бразильский туннельный комитет

CBT-0014-2021                                                        São Paulo, 8th of March               2021.

Brazilian Tunnel Committee

Dear colleagues from the ITA-AITES Working Groups,

The Brazilian Tunnelling Committee – CBT, as some of you might already know, is organizing a debate with women tunnellers, discussing about the participation of women in the tunnel industry and its challenges, on March 25th, on our YouTube Channel.

Since a couple of weeks, we have reached some colleagues asking for numbers of an estimate of the women’s participation in tunnel projects in their countries. We got already some rough estimate, as most of the countries, including Brazil, do not have precise numbers. Nevertheless, we are still missing the data from many countries.

We have, so far, this estimate for the USA, Canada, Nigeria, Croatia, Turkey, Russia, Poland, the Netherlands, China, Australia, Austria, as well as ITACUS board. Thanks a lot for all the valuable contributions.

If your country is not cited above, it would be great to hear from you, even if it is just an estimate from your own experience, of how many women are involved in the tunnelling industry, in your country. If you have an estimate from 30 years ago and now, that also adds valuable information. We will be deeply grateful for your support. Please, send us an email to cbtabms@tuneis.com.br.

Dear Madam, Sir,

The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) has advised ITA that WTC 2020 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is cancelled. The Executive Council of ITA supports IEM’s decision to cancel a physical WTC 2020. ITA shares IEM’s view that this is in the best interests of the welfare and safety of our global ITA family.

IEM has also advised ITA that they intend to hold a virtual conference instead of WTC 2020 and are not intending to provide a substantial refund of the monies received from sponsors, exhibitors, and registrants.

ITA expects IEM to provide substantial refunds for all sponsors, exhibitors and registrants and will continue to work to achieve this outcome. With a successful resolution of the refund issue ITA could support the concept of a virtual conference in 2020.

We acknowledge the great efforts that have been expended by IEM and our global family to prepare for WTC 2020 and express our shared disappointment that the global pandemic has led to this outcome.

Looking to the future we hope the COVID19 crisis can be brought under control so that the international tunnelling community can safely meet again and work together for a better-shared future.

As far as ITA activities are concerned a virtual General Assembly will be held in September and the different Working Groups and Committees meetings will also be organized on a virtual basis. We will keep you informed of ITA initiatives on this subject.

Thank you for your understanding.

Annexe ment. / Encl. ment.

In the issue 11 (February 2002) of British magazine Ingenia, magazine of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Sir Alan Muir Wood delivered a “Tunnel Vision”.

You will find hereafter some “key sentences” of the article which may help to better know what was Sir Alan “spirit” concerning engineering and specifically tunnel engineering.

Innovation in tunnelling has been a key to economy and safety.

Above all, successful tunnelling depends on management of uncertainty of the ground and how it may affect a specific scheme of construction within a specific project.

The success of the scheme depends therefore greatly upon the all-round competence of the engineer, including an ability to understand the owner’s interests as well as the existing and potential capabilities of construction techniques.

Economy and efficiency would be served by freeing the contractor from the need to carry responsibility for incalculable risks beyond his control, by the use of such features as “reference conditions” which set clear limits on physical features, usually based on characteristics of the ground, that fall within the contractor’s liabilities.

The secret of success in tunnelling is to recognise the ubiquity of uncertainty which attends work beneath, and sometimes a long way beneath, the surface of the ground. The nature of the uncertainty needs to be identified and a management strategy for its containment developed, specific to the project.

Uncertainty is a feature that is unavoidable in tunnelling. But it can be understood and controlled so that it does not cause damaging risk.
